India Open 2024: Jonathan Christie Qualifies For Round Of 16

JAKARTA Jonatan Christie's men's singles appeared dominant in defeating Long Angus to ensure they qualified for the second round of the 2024 India Open.

Jonathan only needed 34 minutes to win two straight games 21-13 and 21-7 over the Hong Kong representative at KD Jadhav Indoor Hall, New Delhi, India, Wednesday, January 17, 2024, afternoon WIB.

In the first game, Jonathan was 4-6 behind. However, he could not be overtaken at all after scoring five consecutive points to turn around ahead of his opponent.

Entering the second game, Jonathan immediately scored eight points in a row. He continued his appearance with five consecutive points two more times to excel with a distance of 19-4 points.

The opponent had added one point before Jonathan reached the match point. The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist then closed the match after his two efforts had been blocked by the opponent.

"Every day, every game is definitely not easy. However, today I can play better than the opponent. He looks like he's nervous or under pressure," said Jonathan after the match.

Jonathan and Ka Long Angus previously always went tight. In the previous 11 meetings, Jonathan was recorded as a narrow lead in a 6-5 win-loss record.

This victory is the third in a row that Jonathan has secured over Ka Long Angus. Two consecutive wins he previously won at the French Open 2022 and the Hong Kong Open 2023.

"I have prepared, learned from his previous meeting at the Hong Kong Open 2023, where we played tight. In fact, it has always been tight in the last few matches. Praise God, what we want to implement goes well," said Jonatan.

Jonathan is Indonesia's fourth representative to advance to the second round of the BWF Super 750 event. The previous three tickets were pocketed by Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto, and Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati.

Rehan/Lisa confirmed tickets today after their opponents from Hong Kong, Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet, were injured and decided to withdraw. The injury was suffered by Tse Ying Suet.
