Vietnam Has Registered 26 Players For The 2023 Asian Cup Amid Injury Storm

Vietnam coach Philippe Troussier has difficulty determining players for the 2023 Asian Cup due to an injury storm (doc. VTCNews).

JAKARTA - Vietnam has registered 26 players with the AFC to be brought to the 2023 Asian Cup finals on 12 January-10 February 2024 in Qatar.

Vietnam coach Philippe Troussier had difficulty dwindling the number of players to 26. He had to go back and forth to cross out and bring in players during the training camp.

However, the French coach still brought 30 names to Qatar for the final training camp since January 5, 2024.

Interestingly, Vietnam seems difficult to play their flagship midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc who was injured at the last moment before the team left for Qatar. Hoang Duc turned out to be recovering on the day of departure for Qatar January 4, 2024.

However, Nguyen Hoang Duc's name remains in 26 players registered by Troussier to the 2023 Asian Cup.

Not only Hoang Duc, but Troussier previously also lost seven other pillars due to injury, namely Dang Van Lam, Que Ngoc Hai, Nguyen Thanh Chung, Hoang Van Toan, Nguyen Duc Chien, Nguyen Thanh Nhan, and Nguyen Tien Linh.

To patch the crossed out player, Troussier brought in six names, four of whom were from the U-23 team. Two replacement names are Ho Tan Tai and Pham Van Luan.

Meanwhile, the four players who were promoted to the senior team included Nguyen Van Viet, Le Van Do, Nguyen Van Truong, and Bui Vi Hao.

"Unfortunately some players suffered injuries in the 2023/24 V-League finals. I asked them to gather early for a health check."

"There is something lighter and we have to make predictions when to return and use it in the upcoming tournament or not. This group of players is in a recovery period with doctors. I hope they can play in the near future."

"The whole team is actively training and fortunately there are no new injuries. All cases of injury emerged before the players joined the national team. I evaluated the players who performed well and tried to assert themselves," said Troussier.

Vietnam is already in Qatar for the final training camp. Previously, they won against Kyrgyzstan in a test match on January 1, 2024.

Vietnam became one of the opponents of the Indonesian national team in Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup with Japan and Iraq. Their inaugural match began against Japan on January 14, 2024.
