Thailand's MotoGP Statistics

JAKARTA - MotoGP has returned to Thailand this weekend after two races in 2020 and 2021 in Buriram were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thailand's first GP will be held in 2018, and this year's series will be the third opportunity for the country of the White Elephant to host MotoGP.

In 2018, Chang International Circuit became the 28th circuit to hold MotoGP racing. Since then, two other circuits have followed in the footsteps of Thailand, namely the Algarve Circuit in Portugal and the Mandalika Circuit in Indonesia, enlivening MotoGP.

Buriram is one of 12 tracks in Asia that have been used by Grand Prix racing. The other circuits are Motegi (66 races), Sepang (62), Lusail (59), Sukera (56), Shah Alam (21), Shanghai (12), Istanbul Park (9), Fisco/Fuji (8), Sentul (6), Johor (3), and Mandalika (3), according to MotoGP records.

At the inaugural Thai GP, Marc Marquez defeated Andrea Dovizioso and Maverick Vinales. In Moto2, Francesco Bagnaia won over Luca Marini and Miguel Oliveira, while in Moto3, Fabio Di Giannantonio won over Lorenzo Dalla Porta and Dennis problemia.

Of the nine podium winners above, six of them will race in MotoGP class in Thailand this weekend.

Since Buriram debuted on the 2018 MotoGP calendar, Honda has won both races in the premier class in Thailand through Marc Marquez in 2018 and 2019. Marquez also won pole in 2018.

Yamaha became the manufacturer with the most podiums in Thailand after Maverick Vinales finished P3 in 2018 and 2019, and Fabio Quartararo finished P2 in 2019. Quartararo also won pole in 2019.

Ducati finished one podium in Buriram when Dovizioso finished second in 2018. In 2019, Dovi once again became the front Ducati rider to finish P4.

Dovi started P3 in 2018 with Ducati, being the only rider on a European bike to start and finish the race in the top three in Buriram.

Suzuki's best result in Buriram is P5 ALex Rins in 2019.

While Aprilia finished best in Buriram through P13 Aleix Espargaro in 2018. In 2019, the only Aprilia driver to finish the race was Andrea Iannone at P15. Espargaro failed to complete the race due to electronic constraints.

Pol Espargaro presented the best KTM finish in Thailand through P13 in 2019.

After finishing P8 in Motegi, Quartararo expanded his position as the leader of the standings after his main rival, Francesco Bagnaia of the Ducati team, fell on the final lap trying to overtake him at Turn 3.

With four races remaining, Quartararo is now 18 points ahead of Bagnaia, and 25 points from Espargaro who failed to finish in the points zone today.
