JAKARTA — RNF Yamaha Racing team rider, Andrea Dovizioso, has decided to retire from MotoGP. He will end his career after the San Marino Grand Prix race, in September.

The shocking news was announced by the RNF Yamaha team on Thursday, August 4. The position of the Italian rider will be replaced by another senior rider, Cal Crutchlow.

Cal Cruthlow himself is not new to MotoGP. He has previously ridden Yamaha and Honda satellite motorcycles.

"Andrea Dovizioso will retire from racing after the San Marino Grand Prix," reads a statement by MotoGP on their official website.

The news of the 36-year-old rider leaving MotoGP has emerged in recent months. He was previously rumored to be finishing the 2022 season before ending his career.

However, recently he felt he could no longer compete on the track of the most prestigious motorcycle race. That feeling is what made him decide to retire in the middle of the current season.

"Unfortunately, in recent years MotoGP has changed a lot. The situation has been very different since then. I never felt comfortable with the bike," he said.

The San Marino race will take place on September 4 closest to the British and Austrian GPs. After the San Marino race, MotoGP is still holding six more series.

During his time in MotoGP, Dovizioso was recorded as a champion 24 times. The former 2004 125cc world champion has also been runner up while still strengthening the Ducati team.
