Sean Gelael Joins WRT World Champion Team Next Season

JAKARTA - Sean Gelael will appear to strengthen Team WRT to realize his ambition to become world champion in the 2022 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMP2 endurance racing competition.

The news of Sean joining the world champion team this season was conveyed by his father, Ricardo Gelael when met by several media at his residence in South Jakarta, Thursday night.

This season, the racer who was born on November 1, 1996, made history by becoming the runner-up in the LMP2 class with JOTA #28 which consisted of Tom Blomqvist from England, and Stoffel Vandoorne from Belgium.

"Next season, Sean will not be with JOTA, but with WEC", said Ricardo, citing Antara, who also said that later Sean would still be with Stoffel Vandoorne and Tom Blomqvist.

In addition, the plan is that Antonio Giovinazzi will end the season in Formula (F1) and next year Giovinazzi will compete in Formula E with Dragon Penske.

The presence of Giovinazzi, as an anticipatory measure considering that next season Tom Blomqvist will also compete in IMSA Weathertech SportsCar.

"Tom got a contract from the Acura team to compete in IMSA. But the actual race did not clash with WEC. For Giovinazzi there has been no confirmation to us so far. He does race in Formula E, but the race schedule also clashes with WEC. Maybe in some series, he can perform", said Ricardo added.

By joining the WRT team, Sean has a great chance to be able to realize his ambition to become the WEC 2022 world champion. WRT is a team that has successfully won the endurance competition this season. Sean's steps to be able to rise to the WEC's highest caste, namely, Hypercar in the 2023 season will also be wide open.

According to Ricardo, Sean regained his passion by paving the way for the WEC. "If you say satisfied, I am satisfied with the results of this season and Sean fits here", concluded Ricardo.

Of the six series that were undertaken this season, Sean Gelael and his friends finished in second place three times, namely in 8H Portimao (Portugal), 24H of Le Mans (France), and 6H of Bahrain (Bahrain). Then, in third place twice, namely in 6H of Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) and 8H of Bahrain (Bahrain), and once finished fifth in 6H of Monza (Italy).
