JAKARTA - A Chery car that still uses a temporary license plate went viral on social media after it was reported to have caught fire on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road on March 31. In response to the incident, Chery Sales Indonesia provided an official explanation regarding the incident.
A number of accounts on TikTok and Instagram uploaded videos showing a Chery Tiggo Cross CSH car on fire on the toll road. In the video, officers can be seen trying to put out the fire that came from the white hybrid vehicle.
Even though it has been handled, smoke still seems to be coming from the engine hood. Public spotlight points to the condition of the car which looks new.
The vehicle is also known to still use a temporary white-red number plate, which indicates its status as a Motor Vehicle Trial Sign (TCKB).
Through an official statement, PT Chery Sales Indonesia said that it had conducted an initial investigation with a technical team at the scene in accordance with global inspection standards. It was explained that the vehicle was in the process of internal delivery to a storage area, not for consumers.
"Based on the chronology, the vehicle was driven for internal delivery purposes, from the dealer to the storage area. This delivery is a process that is not related to the purchase or journey of the consumer," said a statement from Chery Sales Indonesia, quoted Thursday, April 2.
"We also ensure that there were no casualties in this incident. Based on the results of the initial investigation, the driver said that the vehicle was functioning normally without any error notification on the dashboard system, and began to pull over after seeing smoke," he continued.
Chery also revealed that the source of the smoke was identified as coming from the front of the vehicle. In the initial investigation phase, no indications were found that led to the battery or electrical system, which is located at the bottom of the vehicle, from the middle to the back.
"However, the possibility of other factors, such as the involvement of external materials or foreign objects outside the product components, cannot be ruled out," he said.
Currently, Chery's technical team is still conducting a thorough investigation. The company confirmed that it would cooperate with the parties concerned as part of its commitment to safety, product quality, and compliance with applicable regulations.
