JAKARTA - Mercedes-Benz seems to be closing the EQE electric sedan chapter. After failing to meet market expectations as experienced by the EQS, this model is confirmed not to continue to the second generation.
Reported by Carscoops, Monday, January 26, the German manufacturer is preparing a new, more conventional electric sedan, based on the latest generation of the E-Class. The replacement model will come with the name E-Class with EQ Technology.
Recently, its prototype was caught on camera undergoing testing in Europe with a thick camouflage cover. Although design details are still tightly closed, it is strongly suspected that this car will adopt the design language of the electric GLC, but translated into a more classic three-box sedan format.
The initial impression of the appearance can be seen through the rendering by Nikita Chuyko from Kolesa. Like the GLC EV, this electric sedan features a large illuminated grille that dominates the front.
At a time when BMW is starting to reduce the size of its giant grille, Mercedes looks increasingly confident in maintaining the element. Interestingly, the silver coating on the grille looks integrated with the body color, so it doesn't look excessive.
However, it is still a question mark whether this design will remain harmonious if combined with a darker paint color. In the lighting sector, the E-Class EQ is expected to look different from the gasoline version.
Instead of a complex-shaped headlight, this electric variant is likely to carry a cleaner design, complete with a star-shaped LED daytime running light typical of Mercedes. The back is also not spared from new touches.
Although its silhouette is similar to the conventional-engined E-Class, this electric sedan is believed to be equipped with a more futuristic rear lamp design. One of the important changes is visible on the side profile, namely the presence of a fourth window behind the second row door.
Even so, Mercedes still has the option of imitating the Maybach S-Class approach with a three-window layout and the last panel that extends to the C-pillar. Carscoops editors predict that this latest electric E-Class will use the MB.EA platform, just like the GLC EV.
This means that the two have the potential to share battery and powertrain configurations. Currently, the GLC 400 4Matic with EQ Technology is equipped with a 94 kWh battery and two electric motors that produce 483 hp of power with 800 Nm of torque. The battery capacity is capable of providing a range of up to 715 kilometers based on the WLTP cycle.
With the slimmer and lower E-Class EQ body, the mileage is predicted to be more impressive. Not only that, the 800-volt electric architecture also allows for fast charging capabilities of up to 330 kW, making it one of the most advanced Mercedes electric sedans ever.
