JAKARTA - Automotive manufacturer from China, BYD can smile widely after learning to become the most popular brand on the Singapore market in the first four months of 2025 by shifting Toyota, its rival from Japan for the first time.

This is certainly not surprising given BYD's ambitious efforts to increase sales in foreign markets in China while strengthening its determination to compete with brands such as Toyota and Volkswagen.

Reuters reported on Thursday, May 15, the manufacturer managed to sell 3,002 vehicles or contribute up to 20 percent of vehicle sales in neighboring countries during January-April this year.

Behind BYD, there was Toyota which pocketed sales of 2,050 units and Tesla up to 535 units in the same period.

Of course this makes the manufacturer, which was founded in 2003, the best-selling brand until the end of 2025 in Singapore and can dominate the long-dominated market by Toyota.

Previously, Toyota dominated the Singapore market with a sales book of 7,876 units in the 12-month period in 2024 and outperformed BYD which only pocketed 6,191 units.

The rapid sales growth of BYD in Singapore underscores its efforts to focus on overseas markets amid intense price competition at home.

The automotive manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China has entered the Singapore market since 2022 or one year later than Tesla.

Despite being a new player, BYD cannot be underestimated. In 2023, the brand recorded sales growth nearly doubled to 1,416 units. Meanwhile, Tesla only obtained 941 units with an increase of 7 percent.

Its achievement in Singapore could smooth DOWN BYD's ambitious targets by 2030, of which half of its total sales are targeted to come from international markets outside China.

This great ambition will be driven by aggressive expansion into the European region and Latin America. An anonymous source revealed that BYD executives have conveyed this vision to small groups of investors since late last year, stressing that the European market is an important key to realizing the target.
