JAKARTA Cambodia has officially withdrawn its participation from eight sports at the 2025 SEA Games multi-pronged sporting event in Thailand for security reasons amid conflicts with the host country.
The decision was announced by the Cambodian National Olympic Committee (NOCC) amid heated situation due to a border dispute with Thailand that has been going on since the beginning of this year.
In an official letter sent to the SEA Games Federation, NOCC confirmed that Cambodia will not participate in a number of sports including football, so there is the potential for a re-drawn for the group stage.
"This adjustment was made due to significant security concerns, which pose challenges in ensuring the safety and protection of our athletes and officials," the statement read.

Sporadic armed clashes between the militaries of the two countries broke out in border areas and killed more than 40 people in five-day fighting in July 2025.
The ceasefire mediated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, had suppressed the escalation of the conflict. However, diplomatic relations between the two countries have not fully recovered.
NOCC Secretary-General Vath Chamrouun confirmed that the decision was taken solely based on security considerations and was reluctant to link it to regional tensions between the two countries.
"The reduction in the number of athletes means it will be easier for us to control," Vath said.
In Facebook's upload, NOCC said Cambodia is now only sending 150 athletes. They will compete in 13 sports, far less than the original 333 athletes' plans.
The 2025 SEA Games in Thailand will take place on December 9-20. Overall there are 50 sports and 574 match numbers contested in the event.
Apart from Cambodia's problems, the SEA Games are also being disturbed by flood problems. The organizers were forced to move several match venues from Songkhla to Bangkok due to high flooding inundating the southern part.
