JAKARTA - Director Gina S. Noer presents his first original film with Netflix Indonesia, Aku Sebelum Aku. This family film is starring Ringgo Agus Rahman, Bimasena, Widuri Puteri, Poppy Sovia, Prastiwi Diarti and Aming.
"Aku Sebelum Aku" tells the story of Jati (Bimasena) who is in conflict with his father, Pak Jaya (Ringgo Agus Rahman), especially talking about the future. Jati begins to discover a new world after transferring schools and meeting Asa (Widuri Puteri).
"Actually, this film is very personal for me, because the research is actually the "Me Before Me" version of Gina S. Noer. Initially my second child, his call Bung, was 14 years old. He really likes history. One day he asked my mother who is now 80 years old (born in 1945): "Grandma, what does it feel like to be born in a month when Indonesia is not independent and then grow up as a child when Indonesia is just independent?" said Gina S. Noer in a film press conference in Central Jakarta on Saturday, July 11.
"My mother was shocked because she never questioned it to her. Even though she has gone through Indonesia's independence, political crises, from analog to digital, even now facing AI. From that question, it made me realize that I didn't really know about my family's history," he continued.
Through this film, Gina S. Noer hopes that "I Before I" will be a reflection on how the audience sees parents individually. He feels that what happened in the past has an effect on one's view today.
"A lot of things in this film are part of my life. We often just think "Oh my god, my father is crazy, my mother is crazy," but we never really see how they were raised, how they had to survive, and how colonialism actually formed our relationships. That's why there shouldn't be oppression, because the effects go down to the grandchildren. This film is for everyone who wants to be triggered to know who he is better," he continued.
Prastiwi Dwiarti or commonly known as Tiwi T2 as Pak Jaya's wife named Ambu Asih explained that this film made her learn a lot as a mother.
"I learned a lot in this film because it just so happens that I am also a mother with a teenage child who wants to know a lot. I learned about how a mother or wife is in the middle of a family without having to say much, but her strength is born from a "silent word". Silence does not mean not having an opinion, but it is always there, always present, and trying to be the safest place for her family," said Prastiwi Dwiarti.
The film "I Before I" will be released on Netflix starting July 16, 2026.
