JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan assesses that the proposed change of street name with the name of a Betawi figure is worthy of serious consideration.
"The proposals to use street names with the names of Betawi figures deserve serious consideration with various contexts that must be considered," said Anies Baswedan in a webinar quoted by Antara, Thursday, October 28.
This, Anies continued, considering that Betawi culture is one of the elements of society that facilitates important events in the journey of the Indonesian nation and state in Jakarta.
"This Betawi community facilitates the process of compounding between elements of various nations that occurs in this city," he said.
However, Anies reminded that historical elements also need to be considered in changing the name of the road.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Committee III DPD Sylviana Murni who is also the initiator of the event said that the Betawi community proposed several names that are figures to be used as roads in the capital city.
These names include Ismail Marzuki being proposed to change Jalan Cikini Raya, the name H Darip being proposed to changing Jalan Bekasi Timur Raya, the name Mahbub Djunaedi replacing Jalan Salemba Tengah, the name Guru Marzuki replacing Jalan Masjid Jatinegara, and the name Habib Ali Kwitang changing to Jalan Kembang III.
According to Sylviana, this proposal departed from the desire to commemorate the services and enthusiasm of these Betawi figures in living their lives and in their struggles.
"With this proposal, we hope to transmit the spirit of Betawi leaders in living life, on the other hand, we also want the streets of the capital to be more fragrant every time we look at them, and we can remember and practice their fighting spirit," said Sylviana.
However, Sylviana also agrees that there must be a study of historical elements that are considered in changing street names.
"Don't let the previous street names that have inherited the history of our predecessors be lost, therefore this needs serious attention," said Sylviana.
