JAKARTA - The government of Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, reports that currently there are around 5,000 uninhabitable houses owned by underprivileged communities in the southernmost area of the Republic of Indonesia.

"We are now in Rote Ndao Regency, there are 5,000 uninhabitable houses, and we are in the middle of a program to build suitable houses to live in," said Deputy Regent of Rote Ndao Stefanus Saek as quoted by Antara, Friday, October 22.

This was conveyed in connection with the efforts of the Rote Ndao Regional Government in an effort to reduce the extreme poverty rate in the area which now reaches 28,720 million or equivalent to 16.21 percent of the total population in Rote Ndao which reaches 143,000 people.

Stefanus said that the repair of uninhabitable houses in the district was included in the main program whose target was to complete by 2024.

"So we are targeting that in 2024 Rote Ndao will be free from uninhabitable houses," he said.

The repair of uninhabitable houses, he said, was an effort from the local government of Rote Ndao to alleviate poverty in the area, which now numbers approximately 48,770 people.

He also said that with the efforts or support of the central government to alleviate poverty in the area, of course he was optimistic that the poverty rate in the area could be reduced.

According to him, the local government of Rote Nndao already has several programs to reduce extreme poverty in the area, one of which is short-term and long-term programs.

In the short term, he said, social assistance will be provided to ease the burden on the community. Meanwhile, in the long term, the local government will create a community empowerment program.

"This is so that they have the ability to get a better income," he said.
