Avoid Public Speculation, DPR Commission II Asks KPU To Immediately Decide On The D Day Of The 2024 Election

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR, Luqman Hakim, highlighted the option for the D day of the 2024 Simultaneous Election to be held on April 24, which was conveyed by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD.

Luqman said that the authority to determine the timing of the election is in the hands of the General Elections Commission (KPU) and it is stated in the KPU Regulation (PKPU).

"That's Law 7 of 2017. In preparing the PKPU, the KPU consulted with the DPR, in this case Commission II," said Luqman to VOI, Friday, September 24.

The PKB politician reminded the election organizers and the government to immediately decide the exact date of the 2024 Simultaneous Election. The goal is to avoid speculation that is developing in the community, namely the plan to extend the presidential term.

"It should be decided immediately on the D day of the 2024 election. This is important to end public speculation that there are parties who want to extend the term of office of the president by eliminating the 2024 election. This issue has been widely circulated in the community," said Luqman.

Commission II of the DPR has previously asked the KPU and the Minister of Home Affairs to immediately make a decision no later than October 6, 2021. The reason is that the DPR will enter a recess period on October 7 next.

It is known that the decision should have been taken at the meeting last Sunday, Thursday, September 16. However, due to differences of opinion between the KPU and the Minister of Home Affairs, the decision making on the D day of the election was postponed. The KPU proposed that it be held on February 21, while the Minister of Home Affairs requested that it be held in April or May.

"At the Raker-RDP on September 16 yesterday, Commission II, as stated by the Chairman of Commission II, Pak Doly, wanted before the closing of the trial period, there would be a decision regarding the D day of the 2024 General Election," explained Luqman.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said there were a number of options for the 2024 simultaneous general election date. One of the options that emerged was April 24, 2024.

This was conveyed by Mahfud after the coordination meeting for the simulation of the 2024 election date with the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian and related institutions at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Thursday, September 23.

In addition to April 24, Mahfud said there are still three other date options that will later be submitted to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"Regarding the option, the election will be held on April 24," said Mahfud MD.

Mahfud said President Jokowi had instructed the government to immediately set a date for the 2024 General Election. President Jokowi said Mahfud, did not want wild issues to affect the implementation of the election.

"The President has instructed to immediately set a simulation date for the General Election and Pilkada in 2024. So the President asks us not to be influenced by other issues, amendments, extensions of office and so on. Anyway, set an appropriate election date in accordance with the law, where we agreed that according to the Law on the Presidential and Legislative Elections, the year is 2024," he explained.
