No Development Until Now, Sunter ITF Target Operations Delay Two Years

JAKARTA - The Sunter Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF) waste processing project, North Jakarta, has not yet been developed. In fact, the initial target for the construction of the Sunter ITF was in January 2020 and is targeted for completion in 2022.

Based on this condition, Plt. The Head of the DKI Environmental Agency, Syaripudin, said that the DKI Provincial Government had changed the target for the Sunter ITF to operate for a year longer, namely to 2024.

"The Sunter ITF has just started running. When it comes to operations, ideally 2024. Right now it's 2021", said Syaripudin at DKI City Hall, Central Jakarta, Thursday, September 23.

Until now, there is no clarity regarding the construction of the Sunter ITF. Because last June, a power-generating company from Finland, Fortum Power Heat and Oy, left the Sunter ITF project.

Fortum's exit from the waste-to-electricity development project was because DKI did not receive funding guarantees from the central government. Thus, Fortum was reluctant to disburse a loan of US$240 or around Rp3.42 trillion from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

In addition to the Sunter ITF, the DKI Provincial Government has three other ITF projects, namely in the western, eastern, and southern service areas. These three ITFs are also still in progress and have not yet been developed.

The Sunter ITF and the western region are managed by the BUMD PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro). Meanwhile, the ITF for the eastern and southern regions is carried out by Perumda Pembangunan Sarana Jaya.

However, Syaripudin is optimistic that DKI has the budget to build the ITF. Syaripudin, namely Jakpro and Sarana Jaya, will have partners in this project.

"The budget is sufficient. Later, the BUMDs who work together will choose providers who will carry out their activities. Of course, they have chosen partners who have the ability to carry out these activities with the required technology and all kinds", he explained.
