Indicator Survey: Public Satisfaction With Jokowi's Performance Declines, The Effect Of PPKM

JAKARTA - The survey agency Indicator released the results of a poll on public satisfaction with President Joko Widodo's performance in running the government.

As a result, around 59.2 percent of respondents said they were satisfied with Jokowi's performance. Meanwhile, there were 38.5 respondents who said they were not satisfied and 2.1 said they did not know or did not answer.

However, the Executive Director of Indicators Burhanuddin Muhtadi explained that there was a downward trend in people's satisfaction with Jokowi's performance. Burhanuddin considers this downward trend to be influenced by the government's handling of the pandemic.

"If you look at the trend, there is a decline in President Jokowi's satisfaction, when the survey was conducted under conditions of the implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM). There is an impact of PPKM on a decrease in satisfaction with the President's performance", said Burhanuddin in a virtual survey presentation, Wednesday, August 25.

Referring to the results of the previous Indicator survey, satisfaction with Jokowi's performance reached its highest point of 72 percent in September 2019. After that, the trend of satisfaction with Jokowi decreased.

Satisfaction with Jokowi's performance as of February 2020 decreased to 70 percent, as of May 2020 by 66 percent, as of February 2021 it fell again to 63 percent, and as of July to 59 percent.

Burhanuddin considered that the decrease in satisfaction with Jokowi's performance occurred because the economic condition of the community had declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This declining trend occurs because many people have lost their jobs. There has been a decline in people's purchasing power", he said.

However, the approval rating for Jokowi's satisfaction is still above 50 percent. Burhanuddin considered this to be good news.

"Despite the downward trend, Jokowi's presidential approval rating is still above 50 percent. Why do I say 50 percent is important? That's a psychological number. Because if it's below 50 percent, any political leader must be vigilant", he explained.

If examined more deeply, satisfaction is lower among millennials or younger, Muslim base, especially ethnic Minang, Sundanese, Malay, housewives and other occupations, education, and upper middle income, in urban areas, Sumatra, Banten, West Java, and Maluku Papua. Then, the base of the PKS Party, Gerindra Party, PAN Party and Democrat Party.

For information, this survey was conducted in the range of July 30 to August 4, 2021. The sample was chosen completely at random using the multistage random sampling method.

Respondents who took part in the survey were 1.220 Indonesian citizens who had the right to vote and were over 17 years old or married. The survey's margin of error is about 2.9 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
