JAKARTA - Mayor of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), Sulkarnain Kadir asked the public to continue to comply with the COVID-19 health protocol if the level of community activity restrictions (PPKM) drops later.

"We are still in PPKM Level 3 until August 23. But seeing the development of COVID-19 which is starting to slow down, it is possible that we can lower the level. But once again the health protocol must still be implemented," he said in Kendari, as reported by Antara, Sunday, August 22.

Although the Mayor believes that the PPKM level in the provincial capital will decrease if seen from the trend of developing cases recovering from COVID-19 which is increasing significantly, he stressed that all activities must refer to health protocols.

The mayor also admitted that he was still waiting for a decision from the central government regarding the status of the PPKM level in the area after the validity period ended on August 23, 2021.

"Even if there is a decrease in the level or the PPKM ends, the community is expected to remain disciplined in the health protocol, so that we can maintain it so that cases do not increase again," said Sulkarnain.

Meanwhile, Kendari Deputy Mayor Siska Karina Imran added that the City Government has been working maximally so that COVID-19 in the area can be handled.

According to her, public awareness to listen to the government's appeal is also a determinant so that the region can get out of the difficult times due to the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Once again, back to the community, to ourselves. For that, let's work together to fight COVID-19 with health protocols and vaccinations," she said.

Data from the Kendari City COVID-19 Task Force noted that the number of positive COVID-19 cases as of August 21, 2021, was 7,486 people, 6,943 recovered cases, 449 people undergoing treatment or independent isolation, and 94 dead patients.
