The Government Must Provide Protection For Orphans And Single Parents Due To COVID-19

JAKARTA - Chair of the PKS DPP for Women and Family Resilience (BPKK), Kurniasih Mufidayati, assessed that single parents and orphans whose families died due to COVID-19 needed to receive guarantees and protection from the state. This refers to the high mortality data that makes the number of new single parents and orphans increase.

"It is the duty of the state. If there is no protection, they may have a harder life," Mufida told reporters, Thursday, August 19.

According to Mufida, the government needs to complete a national data collection for orphans whose parents have died due to COVID-19. The reason is that there is still confusion about data related to social assistance in the field.

"Data from the COVID-19 Task Force as of July 20, 2021, there are 11,045 children who have become orphans, orphans or orphans. I think the data will be bigger," explained Mufida.

The member of Commission IX of the DPR also reminded the importance of protection for single parents, especially mothers who were left by their spouses due to COVID-19. Along with the termination of death assistance for those who died due to COVID-19. He said, family resilience would become very vulnerable if a single parent as the head of the household had to fight desperately to meet their daily needs during the pandemic.

"Being a single parent without a pandemic requires a struggle, especially in the midst of various difficult conditions at this time. So they must receive protection," said Mufida.

The PKS legislator for the DKI Jakarta constituency also suggested that the guarantee for single parents is in the form of empowerment assistance, not only consumptive. Likewise, orphans can prioritize education so that they can be independent.

"PKS continues to provide assistance and assistance through the Indonesian Family House. PKS not only provides notes, but also takes action," said Mufida.
