JAKARTA - The speaker of parliament and Iran's chief negotiator accused US President Donald Trump of "theater diplomacy" amid very different statements between Washington and Tehran regarding negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

"'A big attack is coming... wait, forget it, they want to negotiate.' It is a repeated theater diplomacy," Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on social media, reported CNN, Friday, August 7.

Ghalibaf's comments appeared to be a response to Trump, who has repeatedly said negotiations with Iran are underway. Trump told Fox News on Tuesday: "They've been negotiating all day, and it seems to be going very well."

Tehran has denied ongoing or planned US-Iranian negotiations, but Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said mediators were trying to ease tensions and convey messages between the two sides.

Last weekend, Trump said he had canceled the largest US attack on another country since World War II because Iran wanted to negotiate.

Trump at the time warned Tehran they would face a "very tough" attack if an agreement was not reached.

Ghalibaf said the United States' actions of using intimidation tactics, reneging on promises, and what he called fake news as a repressive tool were "a failed strategy."

"Admit the facts and fulfill your commitments. We don't need any more drama," he added.
