President Trump Evaluates Negotiations with Iran Positively

JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran seemed to be "going quite well," while reiterating his positive view of negotiations on the conflict with Tehran without detailing the details of the talks.

"I hear the development is very good," President Trump said in an interview on the "FOX5 1-ON-1" show with FOX5 Las Vegas journalist Tom Durian, which aired Wednesday night local time, launching Al Arabiya and Reuters (6/8).

Although the conflict related to Iran has entered its sixth month and both sides have so far failed to reach a permanent settlement of the conflict, President Trump has repeatedly tried to present the negotiations in a positive light.

President Trump said an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz - a key energy supply route that Iran had closed after the conflict began - would be reached soon.

"I don't intend to kill people and destroy everything completely, even though that's where our previous situation was heading. They want to negotiate and we do it; it seems to be quite good," said President Trump in the interview.

Meanwhile, at an event in Las Vegas, President Trump reiterated a similar stance.

"I prefer to reach an agreement because I don't want to kill people. I don't want to kill people, but sometimes we have to do it - and we have been preparing for it. We are ready to launch the biggest attack ever, and we have hit them hard over the past few months," said the Republican politician.

"However, we were ready to launch the biggest attack since World War II, then they called me and said, 'Please don't do that, let's just negotiate,'" he said.

The Middle East region escalated following the US-Israeli attack on Iranian territory on February 28, 2026, which was responded to with attacks on Israeli territory and US-related targets in regional countries.

On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a framework agreement and began negotiations towards a final deal. However, the talks then stalled due to differences over security guarantees and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Last month, tensions escalated again when the US launched an attack in Iranian territory, while Tehran responded by targeting what they called US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, especially Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
