JAKARTA - The Supreme Court (MA) of South Korea has upheld the prison sentence against former president Yoon Suk Yeol.
Previously, an appeals court in April sentenced Suk Yeol to seven years in prison for obstructing the arrest after Suk Yeol's attempt to impose martial law in December 2024 failed, according to the Yonhap news agency.
SukYeol, who has been detained since July 2025, is accused of ordering presidential bodyguards to obstruct investigators from carrying out a detention order against him in January 2025.
The former South Korean president faces at least eight cases related to the attempted imposition of martial law.
Reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, July 9, the Supreme Court's decision was also the first ruling from the highest court regarding SukYeol.
SukYeol, who is now 65 years old, previously had a career as a prosecutor before entering politics. He was impeached from his post as president of South Korea in 2025, so his five-year term ended earlier.
In June 2025, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced SukYeol to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of abuse of power and aiding the enemy by sending a drone over the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, in 2024.
