JAKARTA - House of Representatives (DPR) Chairwoman Puan Maharani asked the government to evaluate the new student admission process after many participants passed the state university (PTN) but did not register or re-register.
"Information regarding participants who did not re-register for state universities needs to be used as an opportunity to evaluate how the State defines the success of the higher education system," said Puan in a statement, Friday, June 25.
For information, around 60 thousand prospective students of the National Selection Based on Achievement (SNBP) route are said not to have re-registered. The SNBP Responsible Team clarified the information that was circulating.
According to the committee, the data of 60 thousand prospective students not only came from SNBP participants, but a combination of all new student admission routes, both SNBP, National Selection Based on Tests (SNBT), and independent selection managed by each university.
Regardless of where the participants who did not re-register were, Puan assessed that the number of 60,000 was a large number.
"Such a phenomenon is regrettable. Because it hinders the rights of other students who did not pass the selection. The opportunity that exists is wasted, while there may be other children who hope to enter," he said.
According to Puan, until now public attention has been more focused on the number of participants who have passed the selection. In fact, the more important measure is how many Indonesian children can actually continue their higher education after obtaining
the opportunity.
"The success of the selection system should not stop at the announcement of the results of admission only. The state also needs to ensure that every participant who has obtained a seat at the State Polytechnic has the same opportunity to really utilize it," explained Puan.
Puan revealed, based on the information from the SNBT committee team, there were several factors that caused prospective students not to re-register after being declared successful in the selection. One of them is the incompatibility of the choice of study program.
Some participants were said to have been accepted in majors that were not their main priorities. Then the tendency of some prospective students who choose to switch to the independent selection route or private universities in order to get majors that are more in line with their interests.
Another reason why prospective students do not re-register even though they are declared to have passed the National University is due to financing factors where there are participants who do not continue to re-register because they do not pass the Indonesian Smart Card (KIP) Kuliah program.
With these various issues, Puan encourages the Government to conduct in-depth studies as a step to evaluate the implementation of new student admissions in the future.
"There must be an evaluation of the new student admission system. The government must be able to map, where are the missed ones that cause many participants who have passed the PTN to choose not to continue to the next process," concluded the PDIP legislator.
