Russia has handed over the bodies of 522 people identified as dead soldiers to Ukraine, officials said on Thursday, one of the few acts of cooperation between the warring countries.
"As a result of repatriation efforts, the bodies of 522 deceased people have been returned to Ukraine," the Ukrainian war prisoners center said on social media, citing Al Arabiya from AFP (19/6).
"According to the Russian side, the bodies are Ukrainian citizens, in particular soldiers," he added.
Russian Member of Parliament Shamsail Saraliyev confirmed the information to Russian television station RBC.
He said Russia had received the bodies of 33 of its soldiers as part of this handover.
Ukraine did not say whether it handed over any bodies to Russia.
Photos from the Ukrainian prisoner of war center show masked men in white overalls unloading from a white truck.
The announcement of the exchange coincided with each side launching massive drone attacks on the other's capital.
It is known that talks to end the war, which has lasted more than four years, remain stalled.
Since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of fallen fighters have been one of the few areas of cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv.
