JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer told cabinet ministers he would "continue to govern", amid growing pressure over Labour's defeat in recent elections and calls for him to resign.

Speaking in cabinet on Tuesday, May 12, Starmer sought to stabilise his government after what he described as a period of "destabilisation" for Westminster.

"As I said yesterday, I am responsible for the outcome of this election and I am responsible for delivering the change we have promised," Starmer said in a press release from Downing Street No. 10.

"The country expects us to continue to run the government. That's what I'm doing and what we have to do as a Cabinet," he said, adding.

The statement comes amid growing criticism within the Labour Party following the party's electoral setback.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, a community minister, became the first minister to resign, joining more than 70 Labour MPs who have urged the prime minister to resign immediately or set a timetable to leave office.

The chaos worsened on Monday night (11/5) when Downing Street replaced six ministerial aides who had resigned earlier that night, in an attempt to stabilize the lower ranks of the government as pressure on the prime minister increased.
