JAKARTA - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has not agreed to recognize the results of the recent Myanmar election, which appointed former junta leader Min Aung Hlaing as the country's new President.
"Currently, ASEAN has not reached any consensus regarding the recognition of the results of the election in Myanmar," said Assistant Secretary of State for the Philippines Dominic Xavier Imperial, Wednesday (6/5), as reported by the Philippine News Agency.
This year, the Philippines is the chair of the 11-member association.
Min Aung Hlaing resigned from his position as commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces in March to run for president.
The election process, which was held in three stages in December 2025 to January 2026, resulted in victory for pro-military parties, including the Solidarity and Development Union Party.
Ming Aung Hlaing was then inaugurated as President of Myanmar in April, after pocketing 429 votes out of a total of 500 votes in a parliamentary vote.
Responding to the results of the Myanmar election, Imperial said ASEAN continued to be guided by the Five Point Consensus (5PC) - the framework agreed by the bloc to address the crisis in Myanmar.
The Philippine Foreign Ministry on Wednesday also issued a statement urging Myanmar to provide access to the special envoy of the ASEAN Chair to meet with former president Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since being deposed by the military in 2021.
"This will be in line with the special envoy's role to interact with all stakeholders and parties to create a conducive environment for an inclusive national dialogue," the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Furthermore, the Philippines welcomed the report on Suu Kyi's transfer from prison to house arrest and the partial reduction of her sentence, as well as the amnesty granted by the Myanmar authorities to more than 1,500 political prisoners.
