JAKARTA - Arab foreign ministers, Tuesday (21/4), demanded that Iran pay compensation for the damage caused by what they called Iran's attacks on Arab countries and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The attitude emerged in a resolution passed during an emergency meeting of the Arab League held via video conference under the leadership of Bahrain.

The resolution, reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, April 22, states that Iran bears "full international responsibility" for the attacks targeting Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq, and is obliged under international law to provide "full compensation" for all resulting losses and damages.

The resolution also condemned Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz and threats to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, saying the actions violated international law and the principle of freedom of navigation.

Abdullatif Al Zayani, Bahrain's Foreign Minister, said Iran's actions disrupted maritime traffic, threatened energy security, food and medicine supplies, and harmed global trade and the world economy.

He said Tehran must also be held responsible for the consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation.

Earlier this month, Iran demanded compensation from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan, claiming that these countries had taken part in the war against Tehran.

Tensions in the region have escalated after the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28. In response, Tehran carried out retaliatory attacks against Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.

On April 11, Pakistan hosted the first round of peace talks after brokering a two-week ceasefire on April 8.

With the extension of the ceasefire on Tuesday, efforts to hold a second round continue.
