JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon and confirmed his readiness to support efforts towards peace.

"I just spoke with the Secretary-General, who said clearly welcome the steps that will end hostilities and suffering on both sides of the blue line," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, quoted by Sputnik, Friday, April 17.

Dujarric said the UN, through its political and peace missions, will continue to support efforts towards peace.

US President Donald Trump earlier announced that Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to start a 10-day ceasefire on Thursday night (16/4) to achieve peace.

Furthermore, Trump is said to invite the two leaders to visit Washington and hold meaningful talks.

In addition, Dujarric also confirmed reports of the destruction of a bridge over the southern part of Lebanon from the Litani River, warning that more than a hundred thousand people had been isolated.

"Today's attack on the Qasmiya Bridge, which is an important route to Tyre across the Litani River, has further cut off access to areas south of the river, and it affects more than 106,000 people because only one crossing is currently available," Dujarric added.

Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli aircraft attacked the bridge twice, and Israeli drones attacked vehicles near the bridge before an air raid that left one dead.
