JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta DPRD member Riano P. Ahmad responded to Governor Pramono Anung's policy which prohibits ondel-ondel from being misused for street hawking.

He assessed that this practice was carried out by many immigrants who did not understand the value of the ondel-ondel culture as a Betawi icon. Riano revealed that the findings were obtained from the results of investigations and monitoring carried out in the field.

"After we investigate and monitor, most of these ondel-ondel street performers who come to Jakarta are not people from Jakarta," Riano told reporters, Monday, April 13.

According to him, this condition is one of the important reasons for the approach to education in order. Many perpetrators are considered not to understand the symbolic meaning of ondel-ondel as part of the identity of Jakarta culture.

"It means that education is needed, socialization is needed when Satpol PP carries out the ban on ondel-ondel karaoke, that most of them are people who do not have a Jakarta KTP or are not people from Jakarta," he said.

He said that the use of ondel-ondel on the streets as a means of mengamen often did not conform to the rules and cultural values that should be maintained. Riano also highlighted the practice of misuse of ondel-ondel which has been quite often seen in public spaces.

Therefore, he assessed that discipline still needed to be carried out, but it must be accompanied by providing understanding to the public so that it is not merely repressive.

"Of course, in addition to possibly disciplining, there must also be education, notification that this is a cultural icon that cannot be used carelessly, has its own sacred value because it is a cultural icon," said Riano.

"Take firm action, but don't need to be detained. When taken action, disciplined, given education that this is a cultural icon that should not be used carelessly," he added.

Previously, the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung emphasized that the practice of ondel-ondel was prohibited for use as a means of street entertainment. The ban was taken because the government wanted to restore the function of ondel-ondel as a Betawi cultural icon that was displayed properly, not as a means of making money on the street.

"Regarding ondel-ondel, we have made a decision to ban ondel-ondel on the streets," said Pramono at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, Saturday, April 11.

According to him, ondel-ondel has symbolic value as a representation of Betawi culture and Jakarta identity which needs to be maintained its honor. In line with this, the DKI Provincial Government is also preparing a concept of ondel-ondel performances that are more directed and managed, especially ahead of the 500th anniversary of Jakarta.

"Of course we will provide education for the ondel-ondel street performers," he said.

On the other hand, he also asked the Satuan Polisi Pamong Praja (Satpol PP) to start enforcing discipline in the field. Although the sanctions have not been implemented, the ban is ensured to continue.

"In places like that, I ask for the time when the satpol pp prohibits it. Regarding sanctions, which I think have not yet come into effect. But what is clear is that it will definitely be banned," added Pramono.
