JAKARTA - US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said his government was "investigating" an air strike on a girls' primary school in southern Iran, which reportedly killed 168 students.

"All I can say is that we are investigating it," Hegseth said when asked about the bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls' School in the city of Minab, Iran, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, March 5.

He added that the US military "never targets civilian locations."

Iranian officials said the school was the target of a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on Saturday (28/2),

The local governor, Mohammad Radmehr, said the attack hit the school building when the students were studying, killing girls aged between 7 and 12.

The school building was mostly destroyed and the concrete roof collapsed on the classroom.

Iranian state media reported 168 people were killed and at least 95 were wounded in the attack.

Iran accused the US and Israel of carrying out the attack, while the Israeli military said it was unaware of any Israeli or US attack in the area.

Israel has previously denied involvement in deadly attacks in other wars, which it has later corrected after additional evidence emerged.
