France on Thursday responded to what it called Russia's baseless accusations, regarding Ukraine's attempts to obtain nuclear weapons or dirty bombs with the help of London or Paris, calling it the latest example of Russian disinformation.
In a statement published on the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Russia's foreign intelligence service, the SVR, said Britain and France believed Ukraine would be able to obtain more favorable terms if Kyiv had "a nuclear bomb, or at least what is called a 'dirty bomb'." The statement did not include documentary evidence to support its claims.
"This unfounded statement from the SVR has been picked up by various Russian propaganda media on X and by some foreign news agencies," Olivia Penichou, communications director at the French Ministry of Defense, told reporters on Thursday, launching Al Arabiya from Reuters (26/2).
"The Russian Federation often uses disinformation to foster a climate of mistrust towards the actions taken by France and its partners in support of Ukraine. This latest effort is a perfect illustration of that," he said.
Penichou added that Paris always respects its international commitments, especially those related to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier this week said they did not consider it necessary to respond to such blatant disinformation.
