JAKARTA - Minister of Defense (Menhan) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said Indonesia and Turkey agreed to increase defense cooperation in various fields in the Indonesia-Turkey 2+2 Dialogue in Ankara.
Detailing the defense cooperation commitments reached at the dialogue in a joint press statement by the two countries' defense ministers and foreign ministers, Sjafrie said that strengthening defense human resources was the first aspect approved.
"We will increase the human resource investment program for both countries as the foundation for long-term defense cooperation in the Defense Cooperation Agreement between Indonesia and Turkey," said the Minister of Defense as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, January 10.
He said cooperation would be increased in the aspects of education and training of military personnel of the two countries, in order to improve professionalism as well as capacity building and readiness of personnel.
"We will immediately create a working group to carry out cooperation in this matter both in Indonesia and Turkey," said Sjafrie, adding.
Indonesia and Turkey also agreed to increase cooperation in the field of defense industry which includes the development of advanced defense technology such as vital military aircraft technology.
The Minister of Defense hopes that defense cooperation with Turkey in this field can help Indonesia increase its national defense capacity.
According to the Minister of Defense, Indonesia and Turkey agreed to increase coordination and cooperation in strengthening peacekeepers in Gaza "to help our brothers in Palestine as well as to promote regional and global peace and stability".
Meanwhile, Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler said the meeting between his party and its Indonesian partners was very constructive and managed to agree on aspects of strategic defense cooperation that must be improved.
