The North Maluku Regional Police confirmed that all passengers of KM Cantika Lestari 9C survived after the ship ran aground in Weda Waters, Central Halmahera Regency.
"Alhamdulillah, there were no casualties because all 321 passengers were evacuated to Weda Harbor, they were safe and healthy," said Director of Water and Air Police (Polairud) of the North Maluku Police, Kombes Azhari Juanda in Ternate, Antara, Friday, December 12.
KM Cantika Lestari 9C is known to have sailed from Ambon Harbor, Maluku to Weda Port, Central Halmahera, last Wednesday.
The ship ran aground after hitting a stretch of shallow coral eight miles from Weda Harbor, last Thursday.
Azhari explained, after receiving a report from Pos Polairud Weda, his party immediately coordinated with relevant agencies to handle the incident.
"I ordered Polairud members to come down and check the location. After seeing the condition of the ship that ran aground, coordination was carried out to evacuate passengers," said Azhari, who once served as the Ternate Police Chief.
The evacuation process was carried out in two stages, using the KP Gamalama fleet belonging to Polairud Polda Malut, the KRI TNI AL ship, as well as assistance from the harbormaster and the families of passengers.
