BPBD Bima Urges Residents To Empty Sangeang Island

BIMA - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, appealed to residents to vacate Sangeang Island in line with the increase in volcanic activity of Mount Sangeang Api.

"We have coordinated with the sub-district government and village heads in coastal areas to socialize this appeal. Residents who are still on Sangeang Island are asked to leave the island immediately," said Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of BPBD Bima Nurul Huda when contacted in Bima, Saturday.

On November 22, 2025, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the status of Mount Sangeang Api from level I or normal to level II or alert.

PVMBG recorded a significant increase in seismicity since early November. There were 43 earthquake gusts recorded on November 18, 2025.

In addition, five tornillo earthquakes were recorded, 25 deep volcanic earthquakes, six shallow volcanic earthquakes, 31 local tectonic earthquakes, and 56 distant tectonic earthquakes.

Mount Sangeang Api, which formed Sangeang Island, is currently inhabited by around 100 people who work as farmers and breeders.

PVMBG recommends that people, visitors, and tourists do not move within a hazard radius as far as three kilometers from the main crater, and avoid the southeast to the coastline sector as far as 6.5 kilometers.

BPBD Bima improves monitoring coordination, dissemination of information prohibits approaching the hazard radius, as well as data collection on basic logistics if the condition of volcanic activity worsens.

Wera sub-district head, Ilham, whose territory is directly facing Mount Sangengan Api, revealed that residents' activities are still running normally and there have been no reports of direct impacts from increasing mountain activity.
