JAKARTA - The Philippine court on Thursday, November 20 sentenced Alice Guo, a Chinese citizen who disguised himself as a Filipino citizen until finally becoming mayor.

Guo, who served as mayor of a city in northern Manila, was found guilty of overseeing an online gambling center (judol) operated by Chinese nationals, in which hundreds of people were forced to commit fraud (online scams) with the threat of torture.

The sprawling complex, which includes office buildings, luxury villas, and large swimming pools, was raided in March 2024 after a Vietnamese worker fled and called the police.

More than 700 Filipino, Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Taiwan, and Rwanda migrant workers were found at the raid site, along with documents allegedly showing Guo is the president of the company that owns the complex.

State prosecutor Olivia Torrevillas outside the regional court building in Manila, said that apart from Guo, in this human trafficking case, the court also sentenced seven other people to life imprisonment.

"After more than a year, the court... gave us a favorable decision. Alice (Guo) was sentenced to seven other defendants. Life imprisonment," said Torrevillas, refusing to name Guo's co-defendant because of the confidentiality law.
