JAKARTA - The government is reviewing the plan to grant amnesty and abolition to suspects in a criminal act with a hanging legal process.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the discourse was in line with the request from the suspects and their families regarding justice and legal certainty from the determination of their status as suspects.
"Because he has the status of a suspect, there are many problems as well," said Yusril as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, November 13.
He gave an example of several problems faced by the suspects with the stagnant legal process, such as the issuance of a Notice of Investigation Commencement (SPDP) by the police, difficulties in making the company, families uncomfortable with the status of suspected relatives, to death in suspect status.
Yusril explained that the request for clarity on the status of the suspect was submitted through the letters of several people who had been named suspects since 4 years ago or more, even from the families of the suspects who had died.
Several suspects with the hanging legal process who have died are referred to, such as Brigadier General TNI (Ret.) Adityawarman Thaha and Rachmawati Soekarnoputeri, who were each named as treason suspects.
"Even Mrs. Rachmawati has been awarded the Star of the Republic of Indonesia Main award by President Prabowo Subianto," he said.
Therefore, to overcome these various problems, he felt the need for granting amnesty and abolition as legal certainty for those concerned.
However, before submitting his names to the President, Yusril admitted that his party would study this first, by coordinating with the relevant ministries/agencies.
"Regarding this hanging case, we really need to focus on it to be discussed," said the Coordinating Minister.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo said that Yusril would again grant amnesty, abolition, and rehabilitation to the suspects, defendants, convicts, and convicts who had served their sentences, after granting amnesty to 1,178 people and abolition to one person some time ago.
Amnesty and abolition this time are planned to be given to several people, both those who are still in the process of investigation, prosecution, and criminal implementation. Meanwhile, rehabilitation will be given to prisoners who have finished serving their sentences.
"This step is not just a pardon, but part of legal consolidation and national reconciliation," said Yusril.
