YOGYAKARTA Global welfare study (Global Flourishing Study / GFS) conducted by Harvard and Baylor University recently ranked Indonesia as the world's happiest country. In their research, Indonesia ranks first in the most flourish country, defeating rich countries such as Finland or Norway. So, what is the reason why Indonesia is the happiest country?

Please note, to assess which people from which countries are the most flourish, namely the circumstances when all aspects of life, including social, emotional, and environmental, are going well, researchers from Harvad and Baylor University analyzed survey data from Gallup. This data includes more than 200,000 responses in 22 countries and compiled for five years.

In creating a flourishing index, the researchers included various aspects, such as happiness and satisfaction with life, physical and mental health, meaning and purpose of life, character and moral value, and close social relations.

As a result, Indonesia, which in fact has the status of a middle-income country, occupies the top position of the list of the most prosperous countries.

Around three-quarters of respondents in Indonesia regularly attend religious activities at least once a week. The researchers emphasized that the wealth of a country does not always determine the level of happiness of its citizens. In the context of the reasons why Indonesia is the happiest country, social and spiritual factors have proven to be more influential than just economic income.

Indonesia is often compared to Japan in terms of economic development and is said to be still trapped in the middle-income trap. However, this study shows that the success of a nation is not only measured by economic growth, but also from the ability of its people to find the meaning of life and social togetherness.

According to the researchers, flourishing means broader than well-being. This concept includes environmental conditions that support a person's social and emotional growth. Interestingly, this study also found that the younger generation (age 1829 years) is now showing lower levels of flourishing, caused by social pressure, isolation, and life uncertainty.

Even so, the results of this study emphasized that Indonesia has found a balance between social, spiritual, and life happiness.
