JAKARTA - Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. asked residents affected by the 7.4 magnitude (M) earthquake to stay in the highlands and stay away from the coastline until the authorities declared conditions safe.
President Marcos also instructed relevant institutions to immediately evacuate affected residents in coastal areas.
"I directed the National Disaster Risk Management and Reduction Council, Civil Defense Office, Armed Forces, Philippine Coast Guard, and all relevant agencies to immediately evacuate in coastal areas," Marcos said as quoted by Inquirer, Friday, October 10.
President Marcos said his party was assessing the situation on the ground and ensuring all affected residents were in a safe condition.
"Enable emergency communication lines and coordinate with the local government," he continued.
Marcos said search and rescue operations were still in preparation and would restart once the situation was safe.
