Regarding IKN Being The Capital Of Politics, NasDem: The Important Thing Is Not To Be Stalled

JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the NasDem faction, Saan Mustopa, responded to the idea of making the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) the capital city of politics. According to him, the idea is okay as long as IKN development is not a stalled project.

"We'll see, isn't this still 2028, right? If NasDem thinks the important thing is that IKN is not redundant, does not stall, can function and has provided alternatives," said Saan at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 23.

According to him, the government has issued a very large state budget to build IKN. For this reason, he reminded that the project must be properly maintained and utilized properly.

"In fact, it has provided an alternative so that what has been built does not interfere, because it has issued a state budget that is so large," said Saan.

Furthermore, Saan revealed that NasDem had proposed activities at IKN from the start so as not to be neglected. One of the concrete proposals is to temporarily encourage the Vice President to have an office there.

"The first NasDem, so that there is activity in IKN, so that the IKN that is built is not damaged, whether anyone is treating it, right proposes the vice president to temporarily have an office there. If there is a vice president with an office there, activities at IKN will become more lively. All buildings can be well maintained," he explained.

Regarding the meaning of IKN as the capital of politics, Saan said it still needs to be seen developments in the future. However, he ensured, for NasDem the main thing was that IKN development did not stop halfway.

"If no one stalls, NasDem," he said.

Previously reported, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto confirmed the continuation of the Nusantara Capital (IKN) development project in East Kalimantan which will be designated as the capital of politics.

This was stipulated by Prabowo in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 79 of 2025 concerning the Update of the 2025 Government Work Plan which was promulgated as of June 30, 2025.

"Regional planning and development, as well as relocation to the capital city of Nusantara are carried out as an effort to support the realization of the capital city of Nusantara to become the capital city of politics in 2028," reads the regulation.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Muhammad Qodari, ensured that there was no plan to separate the capital city of politics and the economy from the presence of the capital city of Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan.

"Actually, it doesn't mean that there will be a political capital and then there will be an economic capital, right? Later there will be a cultural capital and other capital cities later. No, it doesn't mean that," explained Qodari, at the Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Monday, 22 September.
