New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said his country would determine its position regarding the recognition of the Palestinian state next week during his visit to New York.

"Large conflicts including in Ukraine, Gaza, South Sudan and Myanmar will be in the spotlight as world leaders gather in New York next week," he said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, September 19.

"Our time in New York would be an ideal opportunity to gather information about how various partners view and address the challenges the world faces to help inform our own policy position on some of these issues," Peters continued.

"This includes the issue of the Palestinian recognition complex, which New Zealand has discussed with caution and consideration for months. Next week's meeting will help us finalize New Zealand's position on this important issue, by leveraging the latest available information," he said.

Peters is scheduled to leave for New York this weekend to attend the 80th hearing of the United Nations General Assembly.

There, he will attend a two-state solution conference chaired by France and Saudi Arabia on September 22, where French President Emmanuel Macron and several other leaders have pledged to officially recognize the Palestinian state.

Last month, Peters said Wellington was considering the recognition of the Palestinian state and would make a decision next month.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced in August that Australia would recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly to contribute to international momentum towards a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In addition, France, Britain, and Canada have also announced their intention to recognize Palestine at the meeting, joining the majority of UN member states that have done so.
