JAKARTA - Poland will decide on the procurement of the submarine this week, which will lead to the purchase of the first submarine by the end of the year, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday.

Poland plans to acquire three submarines under the "Orka" program to strengthen its military, modernize underwater warfare capabilities, and establish closer cooperation with NATO in response to what it considers a growing threat from Russia after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

"We will adopt a resolution committed to purchasing submarines by the end of this year. The offer has been reviewed, and now the Polish government will decide who will partner with this program," PM Tusk told reporters.

Polish media previously reported that the offer from fellow members of NATO and the European Union, Germany, Italy and Sweden, was at the forefront of the billion-dollar program.

Italian ship manufacturer Fincantieri and Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the modernization of the Polish Navy, focusing on the Orka submarine acquisition program, Fincantieri said in a statement earlier this month.

In June, South Korean shipmaker Hanwha Ocean added a financing deal to its proposal to sell submarines to Poland.
