JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he was "very disappointed" with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that without elaborating, his administration plans to take several measures to reduce casualties in Russia's war in Ukraine.
The Republican leader also said he was not worried about the warm relationship between Russia and China.
"I am very disappointed with President Putin, I can say that, and we will do something to help people stay alive," President Trump said in an interview at "The Scott Total Radio Show".
President Trump held a summit with President Putin in Alaska in mid-August and then met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with key leaders of the European and NATO alliances at the White House.
Following the meeting, President Trump said he expected President Zelensky and President Putin to hold bilateral meetings before a trilateral meeting that would also involve him.
President Zelensky said Russia had done everything it could to prevent a meeting between himself and President Putin. Meanwhile, Russia said the agenda for such a meeting was not yet ready.
President Trump has told President Zelensky Washington will help ensure Ukraine's security in any deal.
He also again threatened to impose further sanctions on Russia if there was no progress towards a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.
It is known that Russia occupies about a fifth of Ukraine's territory. President Trump said "exchanges on territory" and territorial changes would be critical to any settlement.
On the other hand, Ukraine is against the idea of legally recognizing any Ukrainian territory as Russian territory. However, Ukraine secretly acknowledged that it almost certainly had to accept some de facto territorial losses.
In the interview, President Trump was also asked if he was concerned "about the formation of the axis against the United States by China and Russia."
"I'm not worried at all. We have the strongest military in the world, so far. They will never use their military against us. Trust me," he said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted Putin on Tuesday to negotiate in China, calling him his "old friend."
