Komnas HAM Finds There Are Efforts By The Government And The Police To Limit Information

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) revealed that there were efforts to limit information and use social media during demonstrations in the DPR. This action was taken by the police and the government.

"Komnas HAM also found that there were efforts to limit information through the use of social media by the government and the police," said Deputy External Chairman of Komnas HAM Putu Elvina in Jakarta, Friday, August 29.

One form of restriction of information, he continued, was when Polda Metro Jaya monitored social media accounts that broadcast the action live.

Then, the appeal from the DKI Jakarta Regional Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPID) is also considered a form of information restriction. The institution is known to have requested that excessive broadcasts of violence not be broadcasted.

In addition, Komnas HAM also highlighted the disbandment of the action period at 15.00 WIB. "The use of excessive force and not in accordance with Perkapolri number 16 2006 and Perkapolri number 1 2009 against action participants is a violation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression," said Putu.

Then, there are allegations of excessive use of force by the police. This action even made an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, run over by a tactical vehicle (rantis) Brimob Polri.

"In addition, it is strongly suspected that hundreds of victims were injured as a result of violence in efforts to control the period by the police and arbitrary arrests and or detentions of the protesters," he said.

Komnas HAM opened a complaint hotline at 0812-2679-8880. "I think this number is very important to disseminate," Komnas HAM chairman Anis Hidayah at the same location.

"We have also formed a team to monitor several locations in Jakarta, including standby at the Regional Police and also several hospitals, where the injured victims were in several hospitals," Anis concluded.
