Reported by Reuters, Wednesday, August 27, the earthquake rocked buildings in the capital, Taipei. The earthquake was located about 20 km (12.4 miles) off the coast of Yilan Regency, with a depth of 112 km (70 miles).

TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, whose entire plant is on Taiwan's west coast, said the quake had not reached an evacuation threshold at its location.

Taiwan is located near the meeting of two tectonic plates and earthquake-prone.

More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
