JAKARTA - The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) criticized Israel's Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir who mocked Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti in his cell.

The right-wing minister even attempted to provoke by sharing video footage of his actions against Barghouti who was detained by Israel on X's social media accounts.

UN Human Rights Office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan said publishing the footage was unacceptable.

"The behavior of the minister and the publication of the recording are attacks on Barghouti's dignity," said Kheetan, Tuesday, August 19, quoted from AFP.

Barghouti, who is now 66 years old, was sentenced to life in prison in 2004 on "terrorist" charges for playing a role in the second intifada, or insurgency from 2000-2005.

Barghouti has often been at the top of popular Palestinian leaders' polls and is sometimes described by his supporters as his "Palestinian independence".

"International law requires that all those detained be treated humanely, dignifiedly, and by human rights, they are respected and protected," said Kheetan.

Kheetan warned that Itamar Ben Gvir's actions against Israel's detained Barghouti could trigger a "spread" of violence against Palestinian prisoners resulting in human rights violations in Israeli prisons.
