Terrorist Prisoners Pay Respect To The Red And White During The RI Anniversary Ceremony At Cipinang Prison

JAKARTA - Convicts of terrorism (napiter) also raised Sang Saka Merah Putih at the ceremony to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia at the Cipinang Class I Correctional Institution (Lapas), Sunday, August 17, 2025.

Head of Cipinang Class I Prison, Wachid Wibowo said, the commemoration of independence is an important means to instill nationalism and love for the homeland to all inmates, including convicts.

"Freedom is the right of the entire nation. Through the commemoration of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day, we want to reaffirm the spirit of unity, as well as instill awareness that love for the homeland is an important part of the coaching process," he said.

He said independence is not only a symbol of history, but also a mandate to be realized in changes in attitudes and behavior that are better, including for inmates or prisoners.

"Raising the flag is a sign of pride towards the nation. When it is carried out by the inmates, especially the convicts, this shows a change in perspective," he said.

When the Red and White flag was raised, the atmosphere had to cover the ceremonial field.

Some inmates seemed to lower their heads full of sincerity, even one of the inmates shed tears when the flag began to be pulled to the top of the pole.

"Dulu saya punya pandangan yang salah tentang negara. Tapi hari ini, saya berdiri tegak di bawah bendera Merah Putih dengan perasaan berbeda," ucapnya.

"Saya belajar bahwa mencintai Indonesia adalah bagian dari iman saya. Saya ingin berubah dan berkontribusi positif," katanya.

One of the terrorist convicts, BS, expressed his pride in being able to participate in the ceremony of the 80th Indonesian Independence Day.

"I used to have a wrong view of the country. But today, I stand tall under the Red and White flag with different feelings," he said.

"I learned that loving Indonesia is part of my faith. I want to change and contribute positively," he said.
