DKI Provincial Government Asks Supporting Areas To Participate In Strictly Monitor Air Pollution That Affects Jakarta

JAKARTA - Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, invites areas in the Jabodetabek area for cross-sectoral and regional strategies. This is done in response to the condition of Jakarta's air quality which still often worsens due to various factors, both local and regional.

According to Asep, the decline in air quality in Jakarta is not only influenced by activities within the region, but also by meteorological conditions and contributions from surrounding agglomeration areas, such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur.

Jakarta's air polluting source is influenced by human activity and meteorological factors such as wind, temperature, and weather. Therefore, cross-regional cooperation is very important," Asep said in Jakarta, Tuesday, July 17.

Based on the emission inventory that has been carried out, the transportation and industrial sectors are still the two main sources of air polluting in Jakarta. For this reason, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is currently focusing on controlling emissions from these two sectors through a number of concrete steps.

"The strategic steps that we have taken include socializing the use of mass public transportation, requiring motor vehicle emission tests accompanied by law enforcement, especially for heavy vehicles, to strict supervision of industries such as measuring sustainable emissions in industries that have the potential to carry out pollution," explained Asep.

Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government encourages concrete cooperation with buffer areas to jointly reduce emissions, especially from the industrial sector whose activities also affect the air in Jakarta.

"We encourage local governments around Jakarta to be more stringent in monitoring industries in their area so as not to pollute the air which is then carried to Jakarta," he said.

In addition, efforts to reforestation, control of waste burning, and exploration of the implementation of the Low Integrated Emissions Area (KRE-T) are also continuously promoted by the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service to improve air quality in a sustainable manner.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is also coordinating with the central government, including the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Home Affairs, to participate in facilitating coordination between regions to strengthen this step.

"We will continue to carry out intensive coordination with local governments. We will discuss together the sources of polluters and draw up joint actions for control," he added.
