JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) is still studying the concept of car free night implementation from a number of major cities in the world before implementing it in the capital city.
This step was taken following the cancellation of the car free night trial in the Sudirman-Thamrin area which was previously planned for Saturday night last week.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, said that his party is conducting benchmarking for car free night models or night markets in various countries.
"We are conducting secondary benchmarking of the big cities of the world that carry out a car free night or night market that is equivalent to what will later be held in DKI Jakarta," said Syafrin, Friday, July 11.
He gave an example of the implementation of a car free night in Hong Kong which was not held on the main road, but on parallel roads that already had economic activity at night.
"For the main road whose economic activity is already high, it is no longer disturbed by the night market or car free night," he explained.
Apart from Hong Kong, the DKI Provincial Government is also reviewing the implementation of car free night at Temple Street, Singapore, which routinely holds night activities on one-way roads.
Syafrin added that his party was also watching the implementation of a vehicle free day in the Ginza area, Tokyo. According to him, similar activities in Japan are seasonal and are held in a limited period of time.
"In certain seasons, they do make similar efforts for Ginza. They apply from 12.00 to 16.00, then from 16.00 to 18.00," he said.
With these various references, the DKI Provincial Government is conducting an in-depth study so that the implementation of car free night in Jakarta can take place optimally without disturbing other activities.

"So, it's more about how the road can be devoted to pedestrians. We continue to explore and are expected to get the best results for its implementation in Jakarta," said Syafrin.
