Russia launched a wave of ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine on Thursday morning local time, with explosions reported in the capital Kyiv and a number of other cities.

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko, via the Telegram social media, said the Ukrainian capital was hit by a ballistic missile attack, with further attacks potentially still to come.

"Stay in a safe place!" said Klitschko, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, July 30.

He said the fire occurred in the Sviatoshynskyi District due to debris from a missile that was successfully intercepted.

He also reported a fire in the Obolonskyi District, but not in the area where residents live.

RIA Novosti news agency reported that explosions were heard in Kyiv, Poltava, and Kryvyi Rih amid warnings of ongoing airstrikes.

The attack came hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Russia was preparing a large-scale attack on Ukraine.

"Russia has been preparing for a major attack for the past few days, and there is a high probability that the attack will take place tonight," Zelenskyy said via his social media.

He also urged the Ukrainian people to pay attention to air raid warnings.
