BRICS Leader Condemns Attacks On Gaza And Iran

JAKARTA - Leaders of BRICS countries condemned the attack on the Gaza Strip and Iran in a joint statement of the group on Sunday in Brazil.

"BRICS is meeting again in Brazil," Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrote in a post on social media X, as quoted July 7.

"With a population of nearly half of the world's population, we are responsible for the 40 percent of the wealth generated on the planet. With the entry of new members, we are strengthening Global South and strengthening the voices of developing countries," he continued.

In a joint statement released on Sunday afternoon, gathered leaders called the attack on Iran's "civil infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities" an "international law violation", quoted by Reuters.

The group expressed "major concern" against the Palestinian people over the Israeli attack on Gaza, condemning what was called a joint statement as a "terrorist attack" on India's managed operandi.

Regarding trade, the joint statement warned that rising rates threaten global trade, continuing covert criticism of the group against Trump's US tariff policy.

The group voiced its support for Ethiopia and Iran to join the World Trade Organization, while calling for an immediate restoration of its ability to resolve trade disputes.

A joint statement with leaders supports plans to pilot the BRICS Multilateral Guarantee initiative in the group's New Development Bank to lower financing costs and increase investment in member countries, Reuters first reported last week.

In a separate statement following discussions about artificial intelligence, leaders called for protection against unauthorized AI use to avoid excessive data collection and enable a fair payment mechanism.

Brazil, which also hosted the United Nations climate summit in November, has taken advantage of the two gatherings to highlight how serious developing countries are in overcoming climate change.
