KY: The Increase In Judges' Salaries Must Be Followed By Moral Commitment To Maintain Integrity

JAKARTA - The Judicial Commission (KY) reminded that the increase in judges' salaries, as announced by President Prabowo Subianto, must be followed by a moral commitment to maintain integrity and independence in adjudicating cases.

"KY reminds and hopes that this increase in welfare must be followed by a moral commitment of judges to maintain integrity and independence," said KY member who is also a spokesman for Mukti Fajar Nur Dewata as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, June 12.

Integrity and independence are considered necessary considering the current condition of Indonesia's judiciary. The public, added Mukti, hopes that there will be no more judges or court officials who commit corruption and gratification.

KY also appreciated the government's policy regarding the increase in the judge's salary.

"This shows the concern of all parties for the welfare of judges," said Mukti.

President Prabowo while attending the inauguration of 1,451 first-degree court judges at the Supreme Court, Jakarta, Thursday, announced an increase in the judge's salary to the highest reaching 280 percent of his current salary.

"18 years the judge did not receive an increase, not even 3 percent, not even 5 percent. Today, President Prabowo Subianto made a decision to increase, the most junior 280 percent," said the President in his remarks.

Prabowo said the judge's salary increase varied, but the highest reached 280 percent for junior judges.

The policy was taken to improve the welfare of the judges. The President also emphasized that the policy was not a form of spike, but a strategic step to strengthen the integrity of the national legal system.

The Head of State stated that he would oversee the increase in salaries for judges, while for other judicial employees, Prabowo asked to be patient after knowing the state's financial ability to increase the salaries of MA employees.

"And all other employees are patient, I have seen the numbers of our country are strong, prosperous, rich, the important thing is that we must protect our wealth, we must manage it as much as possible for the benefit of the Indonesian people," he said.
