The ranks of the Indonesian Navy through the Ketapang Navy Base (Lanal) thwarted the smuggling of 11.1 tons of illegal onions at the port of Ketapang, West Kalimantan, last Thursday, June 5.

Based on the official TNI AL press release, quoted by Antara, Saturday, June 7, it was explained that the disclosure of the smuggling was carried out by Lanal Ketapang's Fleet One Quick Response (F1QR) Team.

The Commander of the Ketapang Lanal Marine Lt. Col. (F) Ivan Halim in the press release said that the disclosure of the smuggled items began with public reports regarding the activity of trucks that often carry illegal goods at Pelindo Port, Sukabangun Regency, Ketapang.

Ivan continued, based on the report, he immediately ordered F1QR personnel to trace the location.

"On Tuesday night, June 3, monitoring and checking of loaded trucks aboard the KM Dharma Ferry II ship at Pelindo Pier, Sukabangun, Ketapang Regency, which will depart for Java Island," said Ivan.

From the results of the inspection, personnel found that one of the trucks was carrying a cargo of illegal onions covered with cardboard.

"The item is called illegal because it does not have quarantine documents and certificates of origin of goods. It is suspected of being the result of smuggling from Malaysia," said Ivan.

Ivan continued, his officers and the customs immediately confiscated the onions. He said the total amount of onions confiscated was 680 sacks or 11.1 tons with a value of Rp227,300,000 at a nominal selling price of Rp388,500,000.

Not only confiscating onions and trucks, Ivan said his personnel also arrested B as the owner of the goods and Z as the truck driver for further inspection.

"They were taken to the Denpomal Lanal Ketapang office for temporary security until a joint check from the relevant officers, in this case the Ketapang Customs and Quarantine of Ketapang Port," said Ivan.

Ivan continued, efforts to prevent the distribution of illegal goods are part of the Indonesian Navy's efforts to provide security for the country.

Ivan ensured that his party would continue to guard Indonesia's maritime border areas so as not to be used as a route in and out of illegal goods.
